Camberwell Submarine

Another popularly promoted oddity of the urban realm that has achieved celebrity status through social media platforms, largely due to its uncompromising concrete geometry. Originally labelled as the Myatt's Fields North Boiler House - the 'submarine' was designed by Michael Luffingham (with Ove Arup as engineers) whilst working under Ted Hollamby at Lambeth Borough Council Architect’s Department. The building provides access to and ventilation of an underground communal heating system that served the surrounding estate and was constructed between 1974 and 1979. Its chimneys were raised during a refit in 2013.
